Can Kids Be Entrepreneurs?
Have you ever wanted to start a business?
Have you ever had an idea about how you could make some extra money?
Or maybe you’ve wondered what entrepreneurship even is.
A lot of times, kids think they can’t be entrepreneurs. But that’s actually not true. Entrepreneurship is for anyone.
An entrepreneur is someone who starts their own business. Entrepreneurship is the process of creating something new and being willing to work for it and grow it so it can make a profit.
Starting a business may sound like a big thing, but it doesn’t have to be. If you’re interested in entrepreneurship, there are three important things to remember.
1. Start With Something You’re Good At
When starting your own business, the first thing you should do is think about what you’re good at.
What is something you enjoy doing?
What is a skill you already have?
Your business should start with something you already know how to do well.
For example, if you're great with animals, maybe you could start a pet care or dog-walking business.
But don’t try to do everything. If you're good at baking but not very good with animals, it probably wouldn’t make sense to start a pet business.
Instead, focus on what you do and do it well.
When you do your work with excellence, people will notice. That’s how you start bringing in customers.
2. Know Who Your Customers Are
The next thing you want to think about is your customer base.
Your customer base is the group of people who would most likely want to buy what you're selling.
For example, if you bake treats, maybe someone in your neighborhood needs a gift for a birthday, a holiday, or something like Valentine's Day.
Sweet treats can make great gifts, so that could be something you sell around your neighborhood.
When you understand who your customers are, it helps you focus your business and grow it.
3. Don’t Wait — Just Start
This might be the most important advice.
Just start.
Don’t wait until everything is perfect.
Don’t wait until you know exactly how everything will work.
You will learn as you go.
There will be mistakes sometimes, and that’s okay. Every person who starts a business learns along the way.
Ask people what they like. Ask what they think you could improve. Then keep learning and growing.
Starting a business should also be fun. You get to create something and see it grow.
Tell People About Your Business
Another important part of having a business is telling people about it.
One of the most powerful ways to do this is called word of mouth.
Word of mouth is when someone tells another person about your business because they had a good experience.
If someone hires you and you do a great job, they might recommend you to their friends or neighbors. That’s very powerful because people trust recommendations from others.
So when you work with customers, make sure you:
Are kind and respectful
Do your best work
Are reliable and dependable
You can also tell people around your neighborhood, talk to friends and family, or put up flyers.
If people see that you are responsible and do good work, they’ll want to use your business again and recommend you to others.
Businesses Take Time to Grow
One thing to always remember is that a business doesn’t grow overnight.
It takes time.
But if you keep learning, improving, and doing your best work, your business can continue to grow.
So remember these three things:
Start with something you’re good at.
Know who your customers are.
Don’t wait. Just start and learn along the way.
Trust God With Your Work
As Christians, we should also remember to trust God with everything we do.
The Bible reminds us that God has plans for us and that we should give our work to Him.
When we do our best and let God guide us, we can trust that He will help us grow and learn.
That’s one of the most important things to remember about entrepreneurship.
